THE IMPORTANCE OF SOFT SKILLS FOR GRADUATES

![]() First of all, let me give you what is the definition of 'soft skills'. In general, soft skills mean character traits and interpersonal skills that describe a person's relationships with other people and are usually referred as Emotional Quotient or EQ by the sociologists. To be specific, for example in the workplace, EQ are complementary to the hard skills; which refer to a person's knowledge and occupational skills or commonly said as Intelligence Quotient, IQ. For graduates, it is important to enhance their social skills in order for them to compete for jobs opportunities. Most of them have high IQ level which give them almost the same chance to get the jobs. This is when the soft skills come into picture and are the ones which decide who will get the job and who won't. These skills are importance in differentiating a graduate from the others. Those graduates who have these skills are more likely to get an employment to be compared with those who lack in them. Here are some of the importance of soft skills for graduates especially in job hunting. Confidence is one of the most important traits that one should have in order to survive a job interview. In many interviews, interviewers will look out for this skill in the job candidates. Of course knowledge and occupational skills are also needed in order enhance one's self-assurance and boost their confidence. A graduate who is confident is able to express themselves and also their thoughts in a better way which allow the interviewers to get their points easily. Other than confidence, effective communication skills are also crucial to the graduates not only during job interviews, but once they get the job they must be able to communicate well with their colleagues Communication skills cover a lot of aspects from language proficiency, appropriate body language to becoming a good listener. Nowadays, English has become one of the world's spoken language and is used widely all over the world, thus it is very important for the graduates to be able to master the language. Most interviews especially those by international companies are done in English and need the candidates to speak in English. Appropriate body language refers to how a person brings him/herself in front of the others. The graduates must be able to present themselves well for example when dealing with people around them. Once they succeed job interviews and become employees, there are also important for them to have the soft skills in order for them to perform well in their careers. Employees must be critical and creative in their thinking ways to solve problems regarding their companies or anything related to their jobs. These skills are needed for them to perform well in their jobs and not only that, they drive innovation and increased efficiency of the employees. A good employee is also a good 'team player'. Cooperation between the workers and also the employer are needed for a company or workplace to be successful and progressive. A company cannot be built by a person or else it will not be there. Therefore, this example of EQ is highly in demand by the employers to hire an employee which must be cooperative and also displays strong leadership skills. Flexibility is also another important trait which a graduate must-have. A graduate must be flexible in a way that he/she can adapt ay situation and dependable no matter what is thrown on them. It is usual for an employee to be transfer to another company or workplace which need them to survive the new working environments. The employee must be ready to change their working habits whenever they are transferred to a new place to suit the environment there. Flexibility is accompanied by the critical and creative thinking ways as they help an employee to solve and survive any problems regarding their jobs. |
